ILS Training
ILS training (or an equivalent life support training) is an important cornerstone of IV sedation in dental practice. It sits somewhere between Basic Life Support and Advance Life Support. It is focused on improving outcomes in medical emergencies, recognition of the deteriorating patient, and better information transfer to paramedic teams. It includes practical skills such as placement of airways and supported breathing techniques, as well as the familiar ABCDE.
It is possible to take online courses in ILS, if you have BLS and want to ‘top up’. However, in order to be compliant your BLS needs to have included Level 3 resuscitation skills.
Most ILS courses are generic and cover all healthcare settings, primary and secondary. They include a lot of information which is not relevant to managing medical emergencies in dental practice. We recommend taking a course which has been tailored to the dental environment
It is better for the whole team to be trained to the same standard, so next time your BLS is due please consider the upgrade, it is well worth it.
The following is a list of providers who tailor ILS courses to dental settings.

Ideal for larger groups
ILS training is mandatory to comply with IACSD 2020 for all dental staff in the room with a sedated patient.
It is an excellent and worthwhile extension to standard BLS training.
